Chestnut honey is obtained from chestnut flowers, which are collected from June to October. This honey has a dark color, a strong aroma and is not very sweet. It has higher anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties than other types of honey.
The chestnut tree belongs to the same family as beech and oak. For thousands of years, chestnuts have been a major source of food for mountainous areas of the Mediterranean region and in Albanian Alps as well – because the grains could not grow. Sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) grows abundantly in Albania and it is an ideal pasture for bees. Chestnut flowers are very productive and effective for apiculture, therefore it is called the bee tree. The chestnut honey has a strong taste and aroma with a slight hint of bitterness. This honey is rich in pollen, mineral salts and tannin and has a high amount of fructose which avoids crystallization and low acidity. Chestnut honey has a dark color ranging from brownish yellow to light brown. Its herbal aroma is unique. It strengthens muscles, improves blood circulation, helps liver and stomach, relieves fatigue, strengthens the immune system and has positive values in the respiratory and digestive systems. It contains more minerals than any other honey. Chestnut honey is very nutritious, with 100 grams bringing 300 calories and therefore it is advisable to consume it in small quantities.
